“Don’t be disruptive for the sake of it,” says Scott Deming

We have seen organisations face problems when someone new comes to fill in a leadership position. Why does this happen?

International speaker, trainer and consultant Scott Deming says that is because people are often focused on being disruptive, creating change simply for the sake of changing – which isn’t going to work.

Every time a new President or chief executive officer (CEO) comes aboard, they usually change the tagline or the mission statement — not because the initial ones weren’t good enough, but because they felt like they had to make a change.

Such leaders aren’t thinking about whether this change transforms humanity and this is where disruption becomes destruction.

Doing something that is meaningful, however, will enable you to disrupt─ in a good way.

Advertising is a very small part in creating success

Scott talks about how money is often wasted on employer branding if companies are not focused on working on their culture.

Often the reason corporations aren’t able to work on their culture is because they don’t translate and transfer it to all levels below them.

How to get people excited about your mission

  • You have to get the right people around you
  • If you want people to truly perform, you have to give them an opportunity to shine
  • You have to let people feel like they are working for something meaningful

“The core of the organisation, the actions that you take should reflect the change you want to make.”
