How we can harness mental health and resilience to improve our physical health in our daily lives?

It wants to keep you alive, but it might be slowly killing you

According to Azran Osman Rani, our brain’s main function is quite simple: survival. It does everything in its power to keep us breathing and existing. That sounds pretty awesome, doesn’t it?

Thing is, just like an overprotective mother can mean no girlfriends for you until college, your brain’s desire to protect you in the short-term has led to processes and bodily systems that can hurt you in the long-term.

Azran is the co-founder and CEO of Malaysian-based digital health therapeutics company Naluri, and in a recent interview with the Linkedpreneur team, he shares some insights about how we can harness mental health and resilience to improve our physical health in our daily lives.

Remembering too much makes you see ghosts everywhere

Dissatisfied girlfriends everywhere beware – turns out our capability to remember causes us to carry the stress of traumatic events well past their time of occurrence. This negative state of mind brings with it all the hormones that are released during such traumatic events.

This causes us to be constantly tense and on-edge, ever ready to react to dangers that are probably never going to come. Ever gotten angry at someone because you think they were about to do something bad that they did a long time ago? Yeah, it’s not good for you or anyone.

For sufficiently traumatic events, individuals can carry this baggage for years. They may carry it for a lifetime if no interventions are made. Imagine being tormented from childhood until death, never able to enjoy true peace of mind.

This past trauma can also lead to individuals worrying constantly about the future. Prior financial struggles can lead to one becoming obsessed with making more money to ensure it never happens again. But how much is enough? There is probably no answer.

So yes, we carry baggage. The question is, can we, and are we brave enough, to confront it and learn to let go?
