Mentoring is a relational experience; if you manage to build a certain type of relationship with your mentee, he/she will be more open to you to ask for your guidance. However, there are also employers who have you-can-do-it-yourself mentality. This happens because:

  1. they do not understand their roles
  2. they do not have time to mentor
  3. they have insecurities
  4. they lack the confidence to mentor


The qualities that good mentors should have are:

  1. generosity
  2. good role-models
  3. good communicators
  4. proactive
